The Division of Coastal Sciences in the School of Ocean Science and Engineering (SOSE) at The University of Southern Mississippi invites qualified applicants for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track faculty position in Carbonate Chemistry or Biogeochemistry at the assistant level to begin in Fall 2024.
Salary packages will be nationally competitive and commensurate with experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities Potential areas of research include but are not limited to: ocean acidification; blue carbon, and effects of natural and anthropogenic stressors on the carbon cycle in coastal ecosystems.
We are particularly interested in scientists bringing expertise in carbonate formation, dissolution, and transformation and understanding the impact of these processes on biogeochemical cycles in coastal ecosystems (e.
g.
the role of carbonates as a long-term storage mechanism of carbon dioxide).
The candidate will be expected to: (1) develop a strong, nationally recognized and externally funded research program; (2) publish in peer-reviewed literature; (3) mentor graduate students; and (4) participate in graduate and undergraduate instruction in the Division of Coastal Sciences and School of Ocean Science and Engineering.
Evaluation of applications will consider the potential of candidates to develop collaboration within SOSE, as well as with other USM academic units including the School of Biological, Environmental, and Earth Sciences.
Minimum Qualifications Applicants must hold a Ph.
D.

The successful candidate will be required to pass a USM employment background check.
Additional Information: This position is part of a coordinated effort to expand research and teaching capabilities across USM’s School of Ocean Science and Engineering that includes the hire of an Assistant Professor in marine chemistry in the Division of Marine Sciences located at the NASA’s John C.
Stennis Space Center, MS and an Assistant Teaching Track Professor with expertise in microbiology and microbial ecology at the USM Gulf Coast Campus in Long Beach, MS.
SOSE includes two academic divisions, the Division of Coastal Sciences and the Division of Marine Science, and four R&D centers: the Center for Fisheries Research and Development, the Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center, the Marine Education Center, and the Hydrographic Science Research Center.
The position will be located in Ocean Springs at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, a marine laboratory featuring comprehensive research programs in coastal and marine biological sciences.
Research program support includes state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and instrumentation; a fleet of small and large research vessels including the R/V Point Sur; the GCRL Museum collection; facilities at the Center for Fisheries Research and Development and Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center; and the NSF I/UCRC Science Center for Marine Fisheries.
