Job Summary The Dean is the academic leader and chief administrative officer of the William Carey University School of Pharmacy.
The Dean is responsible for academic program development and assessment, budget development and supervision, fundraising and financial development, and strategic planning to facilitate the establishment and continued growth of the School.
The Dean initiates and strengthens relationships with the business and professional communities for development, enrollment, and scholastic joint ventures.
The Dean represents the School of Pharmacy to the College’s senior administration, the Board of Trustees, and other internal and external constituencies, and articulates a clear and compelling vision of pharmacy education at William Carey University.
Duties and Responsibilities Includes the following, with other duties that may be assigned by the Vice President of the College of Health Sciences, the President, Vice President of the Tradition Campus, the Provost, and/or Associate Provost of Academic Affairs: Leads the faculty in developing the vision and inspiring others to accept and extend the vision for the School.
Leads the faculty in strategic planning activities to further the School’s mission in teaching, research, service and patient care.
Monitors the progress towards the School’s strategic plan, leading the faculty and/or administrators to adjust the plan as needed and appropriate.
Implements, monitors and adjusts programmatic activities to accomplish the policies established by the faculty relative to the delivery and evaluation of the professional curriculum.
With input from the administrative team and accrediting bodies, establishes the organizational structure of the School to best achieve the strategic plan; staffs the organizational structure, including associate/regional deans, department chairs, center directors, and other administrators.
Appoints the associate/regional deans and department chairs to their respective administrative positions; appoints other administrative and supervisory personnel of the School on the recommendation of the position’s immediate supervisor.
Appoints members, designates chairs and provides charges (beyond standard duties and responsibilities defined by the School’s Bylaws) the School-wide, non-elective standing and ad hoc faculty committees.
Considering the recommendation of the various department chairs, recommends the appointments of individuals to the faculty and staff of the School.
Approves the promotion and tenure guidelines as developed by the various departments’ faculty members, considering the Regents Rules and Institutional policies and procedures.
Provides recommendations on the continued employment, promotion and tenure of the School’s faculty, based on the promotion and tenure guidelines and considering the recommendations of the various faculty committees and departments’ chairs.
Develops, monitors, and adjusts an annual budget of appropriated and non-appropriated funds, linked to the strategic plan of the School.
In consultation with the department chairs and associate deans, allocates space and makes office assignments within the SOP’s buildings.
On the recommendation of the Student Affairs Committee, admits applicants to the student body, places students on academic probation, and/or suspends students from the School.
Serves as the School’s final arbitrator of student, faculty and staff disputes.
Administers the Pharmacy budget in accordance with IRS rules, Mississippi statutes, Institutional Policies, SOP Bylaws, and policies established by the SOP Budget Policy Committee.
Plans and implements, in consultation with the William Carey University Foundation, development activities for the School.

Coordinates the activities of the various Institutional central support services as they relate specifically to the School and its programs and personnel.
Serves on the College of Health Sciences Executive Committee and other Institutional and professional committees as appointed or elected.
Chairs the School’s Executive Committee.
Represents the School to both internal and external stakeholders.
Coordinates the Dean's Advisory Council and the Dean's Student Advisory Council.
Supervisory Responsibilities Supervises associate deans, department chairs, and dean’s office staff.
Responsibilities include assigning work, evaluating performance, and rewarding or disciplining employees who report directly to the dean, as well as addressing complaints and resolving problems of persons who report to those individuals reporting directly to the dean.
Physical Demands Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting, and to use standard office equipment including a computer and 10-key calculator Must have vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone Must have the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time Must have strength and agility to move files, paper boxes, and minor office equipment Ability to drive and travel within the service area.
Exposure to clinical patient care and/or research laboratory s is likely.

Required Application Documents Please upload the following documents with your application: Resume/Vitae Cover Letter Required Qualifications Must possess a terminal degree in the area of Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences or demonstrate a strong understanding of contemporary pharmacy and health care systems, with eligibility for pharmacist licensure preferred.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of successful administrative accomplishment (including program development and student recruitment and retention) and proven proficiency in teaching, service, and scholarly achievement, including competitive extramural funding.
Language Skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
Ability to respond to common inquires or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, faculty, staff, students, and members of the profession of pharmacy and other business entities.
Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
Ability to effectively present information to individuals at all levels, ranging from children to members of boards of director and legislators.
Reasoning Abilities Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions to solve problems and plan initiatives.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with various abstract and concrete variables.
Other Qualifications Demonstrated ethical behavior, professionalism, interpersonal skills, and leadership and management abilities sufficient to effectively direct and develop School administrators, faculty members, and support staff.
Knowledge of, and ability to manage, business entities providing pharmaceutical care to University patients.
Imminent knowledge of current professional trends in pharmacy, and general knowledge of current trends in the professional and business practices of the health care system and a multi-campus health sciences university.
Effective interactions with Mississippi state agencies, boards and legislators, the Mississippi Pharmacy Congress, the Mississippi State Board of Pharmacy, and other professional colleges/schools both within Mississippi and in other states.
Preferred Qualifications A record of effective leadership, efficient administration, and interpersonal skills with internal and external stakeholders in previous management positions.
Demonstrated success in procuring competitive extramural support for research and/or educational programs relevant to a School of Pharmacy.
Documented ability to interact effectively with the pharmacy community.
Evidence of strong leadership and mentoring faculty to attain competitive extramural funding for scholarship and research.
Evidence of competent teaching and development of professional curricula.
National or international recognition in pharmaceutical education or scientific research.
A documented record of successful fundraising from alumni and private sector donors.
A commitment to maintaining high standards in the scientific research and professional program currently offered by WCU’s School of Pharmacy.
Thorough knowledge of accreditation standards and requirements for pharmacy education.
A commitment to cultural, ethnic and gender diversity.
A commitment to active outreach and community service.
